Thoughtful Conservation,
Practical Solutions
Tamar Maor is a sculpture and objects conservator specialising in modern and contemporary materials, mixed-media artworks, and design objects. She is Associate Lecturer (Teaching) in Conservation of Contemporary Art & Media at University College London (UCL) and Founder of TM Art Conservation, an independent practice with bases in London and Houston.
Originally trained in Neuroscience, Tamar was drawn to the intersection of art, materials, and science and began her conservation career after being introduced to the field through her chemistry studies. She holds both an MA and MSc in Conservation from UCL and has worked across major museum collections, including the Horniman Museum, the Science Museum, and Tate, where she spent ten years as a Sculpture Conservator.
Tamar’s work combines hands-on treatment expertise with research-led decision-making and close collaboration with conservation scientists, curators, technicians, and artist studios. Her professional experience includes the conservation of complex contemporary sculpture and installations, as well as work involving artists and estates such as Anish Kapoor, Ron Mueck, Mark Dion, Jeff Koons, and Richard Serra. She has also travelled extensively as a courier and worked internationally on loans, installations, and exhibitions.
In 2017, Tamar was a project conservator on the EU-funded NanoRestArt research programme, which explored advanced nano-material and gel-based cleaning systems for modern and contemporary artworks. Her contribution culminated in the successful treatment of Eva Hesse’s Addendum (1967) and has been widely published and presented internationally.
In 2018, Tamar established TM Art Conservation, providing specialist conservation treatment, consultation, condition assessments, and preventive conservation planning for museums, galleries, universities, and private clients. Her approach is grounded in ethical practice and a commitment to practical solutions that support long-term care and stability.
Tamar is a Professional Associate of the American Institute for Conservation (AIC) and an Accredited Conservator-Restorer with the Institute of Conservation (ICON).
